When you go to a restaurant and, six hours later, can't remember where you ate... Is that a good thing?
I suppose that it's better than clutching your stomach, rolling around on the ground and crying, "God! I'm never eating there again!" But Bob Evans certainly is nothing to write home about. The food is... well, forgettable. The decor, while pleasing to the eye, is strikingly similar to that of other home-style cooking eateries.
Most of the time when I go to a restaurant like this, I order breakfast. It just happens... I open to the breakfast section first, and everything looks good. Pancakes, eggs, bacon... The food at Bob Evans is similar in style to any other sit-down restaurant. An egg is an egg is an egg. The same goes for everything else on their breakfast menu.
Of course, when I don't order breakfast, I get the grilled cheese. (I have become something of a grilled cheese connoisseur.) Bob Evans' grilled cheese is good. The bread is toasted, not soggy, and the cheese is all melted. But it's nothing special.
Actually, it's difficult to say anything of note about this chain. You'll see them at highway interchanges, filled with hungry travelers and screaming kids. The red and white-checked tablecloths are the same in every restaurant. If I didn't know better, I would say that the wait staff is the same in each location as well.
If one thing must be said about this chain, however, it's that they have excellent help. I have never had a rude waiter or waitress. In fact, they have always been exceedingly polite and helpful. One time, I ordered a Diet Coke. When I got my drink, it tasted... odd. Sort of like root beer, but not really. I asked the waitress if she'd given me the wrong drink. Very apologetic, she got me another - and it tasted the same. It turned out that when they had emptied the Diet Coke syrup box, someone had connected a root beer syrup box instead. The dregs of the Diet Coke and the new root beer had mixed in the lines, and I ended up with a mess in my glass.
The manager of the store came over to our table and apologized profusely - and I got my drink for free. It wasn't a big deal, but they handled it well, with a regard for my return business.
That's why I keep going back to Bob Evans. The food is blasé at best. The decor is unremarkable. But the staff is the chain's real asset, and they make me feel welcome.
