| atara's Full Review: Joe's Crab Shack |
I admit it. I am not a big fan of seafood. But since my fiancé is a seafood lover, I have a feeling I'm going to be dragged off to more than one seafood place in my life. (Hopefully, it won't be kicking and screaming.)
And, now that I think of it, going to Joe's Crab Shack was my idea the first time. I had passed it many times, and it looked intriguing... The outside was cluttered with lots of beach house paraphinalia, and music blared from outside speakers. But... they served fish. Ick. I think I suggested the place just so I could see the interior...
...which looked a lot like the outside. Lots of clutter, all of it interesting. The tabletops even have cards and carvings lacquered onto their surfaces. The condiments are displayed in a six-pack container for beer, and the spices themselves are kept in beer bottles. Once you're bored with examining the items at your table, the rest of the decor is interesting to look at. Old record albums are juxtaposed with movie posters and bumper stickers and plastic lobsters. In fact, I was a little disappointed our food came so soon, since I wasn't done examining our surroundings.
Oh yeah... I ordered seafood. All right, so it didn't kill me. It was actually pretty good. I had the snow crab, and by the time I got to the end of my meal I was expert at cracking the legs open and sucking out the meat. I didn't feel so good by the time I was done, but I think it was just my stomach rebelling at the new food.
"What's this supposed to be? Crab? Isn't that a shellfish? Are you trying to kill us here? Get this stuff out of here!"
The first time we went, my fiancé got the soft-shelled crab. He was "less than impressed." The second time we went, he got the snow crab like I did. It was up to par, apparently. (I have nothing to compare it to!)
While we were eating, a voice came over the loud speaker announcing that the "goose has lost its feathers." Shortly after that, all the waiters and waitresses arranged themselves around the tables, and started dancing. The dance looked rehearsed, and they danced to Will Smith's "Men in Black." Why? I don't know, but it was interesting.
I suppose that, trapped in the wilds of Ohio as I am, Joe's will be the closest I'll be able to get to "real" seafood around here. One of these days I'm sure I'll get hauled off to an authentic seafood place, where the crabs are fresh caught and still crawlin', but until then I'll have to settle with Joe's. I'll live.
